Free Virtual Creative Writing Workshop

The creative writing workshops provide a foundation for young authors to participate in the Kids Write 4 Kids annual writing contest. It is free to attend. Check our virtual workshop schedule for dates and times.

The winning story will be published at Amazon, Apple iBookstore, Google Play, and Overdrive for the world to read.

  • Proceeds from book sales on Amazon, Google Play, Apple Books, and Overdrive are donated to the winner’s charity of choice.
  • The winner will be part of the judging panel for the following year’s contest.

Entry Details

  • Open to Canadian residents only
  • Students must be in grades 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8
  • Stories must be original and written entirely by the author
  • Only one entry per author will be accepted; all subsequent entries will be disqualified
  • Only single author stories qualify (no co-authored stories)
  • Stories are accepted in English only
  • Stories can be fact or fiction, prose or poetry
  • There is no entry fee and no purchase is necessary
  • Only online entries will be accepted
  • All entries must review the story checklist

Word Count

  • Maximum word count: 5,000 words
  • The word count includes “a,” “an,” and “the,” but not the words on non-story pages such as the title page or those captions for illustrations or photography
  • Invented spelling is accepted

File Format and Submission

  • The text must be typed and submitted as DOC file format (parents/guardian can assist with inputting the story)
  • Do not submit any images. If your story does have images and your story is selected, a representative from Ripple Foundation will contact you to obtain original images.
